Brand Reveal: Joyful Tantrum Recess

Working with small business owners is such a joy for me. I love hearing the stories of their why and getting to know these people who care about something so much they’re willing to take the risk of starting their own business despite all the unknowns.

I met Julia Kepler several years ago, when she was first opening Serendipity Road in downtown Midland, Michigan. Serendipity Road is a small business that supports small business in the form of a gift boutique. They support over 75 makers from Michigan and many more around the US. I had the pleasure of designing the logo for Serendipity Road in 2017.

In 2019 I was honored to create the logo for Julia’s new toy store, Joyful Tantrum— A Toy Store unplugged so you can plug in with those you love. Now, in 2022, she is opening a new location called Joyful Tantrum Recess!

This branding suite is playful and fun. It’s sunny and it’s a little retro. It’s versatile and has a great color palette of both soft and bright hues, grounded by the classic navy blue used in both of the other stores logos.

Joyful Tantrum Recess is slated to open 05/05/2022 in the old Glover’s Pharmacy & Gift Shop building at 4000 Jefferson Ave, in Midland! I have seen a couple sneak peeks of the interior and I can tell you… it’s going to be a beautiful space!! One of my favorite parts of this project was getting to hear about Julia’s memories of walking to Glover’s from her childhood home, with her sister in a wagon, to shop for gifts. I have no doubt Recess will be an amazing addition to our community.

When Freeland Community School District reached out, they already had a well established icon, the Freeland Falcon, but they did not have specified fonts, colors, or layouts of their logos. What they needed was a complete visual identity system that would bring consistency across district communications.

Once again, nature has proved to be the best place to find color inspiration! When I was a kid I collected frogs— figurines, stuffed animals, bookmarks, whatever! I loved Frog and Toad books.
