Kids Crafts Round Up

Having two kids who love to create as much as I do is such a blessing. Any time we have down time, they’re asking to do crafts! I try my best to come up with low cost things to do, because we are endlessly creating! When they girls ask me if they can craft, I will usually ask them what materials we have, then brainstorm what we can do with what we have on hand. Often times we will hit up Pinterest for ideas also by searching for the materials we have + the words kids crafts. Other times they will come up with something brilliant all on their own. Here are a few of my favorite projects we’ve created together the past few months.

Painted Rocks Cactus Pots

We had mini flower pots around the house from a previous project. If you need pots, you can find them at your local craft, home improvement, or even a dollar store. My six year old used acrylic paint and stickers to decorate the pots. Then we gathered rocks from the back yard, washed them, let them come up to room temperature, and painted them different shades of green. Once the green paint was dry we used a white paint pen to add details, and used hot glue to attach little “flower” rocks on top. You could hot glue the rocks into place in each pot, but my kids like to rearrange them, so I just set them in. This was one of my all time favorite kids crafts we’ve done!

Every time there is an empty toilet paper roll or paper towel roll my kiddos throw it in a shoe box we keep in the closet. When boredom strikes it’s a great free resource to use! We did a search on Pinterest for paper tube kids crafts and saw some pencil holders. With that inspiration my kids came up with these designs. We painted scrap cardboard from packing materials, used paper to cover the tubes, markers to add details, and hot glue to secure the tubes to the base. My youngest later added a bunch of short tubes for her erasers and connected them with tape, which also worked pretty well.

Pop Up Flower Garden

This pop up flower garden card was another super simple, but really fun craft for kids. These neon colors were hard to photograph, so use whatever kind of paper or scraps you have on hand! Even mail or magazines work well!

First I took two 8x5x11” pieces of card stock and folded them in half. Then I cut a wavy line to create a skyline/hill. My daughter drew flowers and bugs, while I used a craft knife and a ruler to cut vertical lines in the green paper. Next we popped the cut green pieces forward and glued all around the cut pieces to attach blue to green. Then we cut out all the flowers and bugs and used a glue stick to attach them all over the scene.

Paper Tube Figurine

This one was so simple and so cute! I simply drew a cactus shape on a toilet paper roll and cut it out of the top, leaving the bottom totally in tact to create a base for it to stand on that looks like a little pot. Then we painted it with acrylic craft paint and added details with a permanent marker.
