Behind the Art: Diametric

Diametric - 36x48”, acrylic on canvas

My latest completed painting is titled Diametric. It depicts a raven and full moon, both of which are considered to be good and bad omens, depending on what culture you reference. The truth is, we see what we seek; good when you look for it, or bad when you look for it.

I have always found things that are opposite to be very interesting. How can two people see the same thing and have such different reactions to it? Our life experiences are so deeply different and distinct from person to person, a raven might mean death and evil to one person, or wisdom and longevity to another. There’s something special about that. We tend to cling to our symbols, but people assigned those meanings, and people are inherently flawed. I think it’s reasonable to say that there are flaws in the symbols we have created as well.

Whatever you are seeking, you will find it.
