5 Things You Do NOT Need to Start Living Your Dream

It’s not easy to do. But try. Try and do what you love with people you love. And if you can manage that, it’s the definition of heaven on earth.
— Conan O'Brien

There are lies we tell ourselves every day. Sometimes they’re excuses not to go for the thing we really want, to protect ourselves from the possibility of failure. Sometimes we get so caught up in what we’re “supposed to do” we forget to listen to our own instincts. Here is my top five list of things you do NOT need to go after your dreams, whatever those dreams may be.

1 - YOU DO NOT NEED To Feel Ready

You 100% do NOT need to feel ready to start working on your dream, you just need to start.

We’re always holding some kind of invitation from the universe and we are arguing with the invitation saying, “I’m not ready. I’m not good enough. I need to take another class! I need to lose ten pounds. I need to do some more research. I need to be more like her. I need to listen to my mom who said I could never do anything.” We’re arguing, and arguing, and arguing. We are deeming ourselves unworthy of invitations instead of trusting the inviter. Right? Creativity doesn’t ask us to be ready first. It just finds us on the bathroom floor, hands us an invitation and says, “Don’t wait till you’re ready, just get up and dance with me.” Everything on Earth... Everything beautiful in the history of the world has been made by people who show up before they’re ready.

2 - YOU DO NOT NEED TO HAVE EVERY PIECE PLANNED

You do NOT need to have a complete and full vision of what everything will look like, because things evolve as you build them. You need to take the first step, then find the next right step, and keep building, bit by bit. Keep working towards your dream.

3 - YOU DO NOT NEED TO KNOW EVERYTHING

You do NOT need to know everything, or be the leading expert on something, before you can share your gifts with the world. Don’t let perfection stop you from starting your journey.

4 - YOU DO NOT NEED A FANCY OFFICE OR STUDIO

You do NOT need a fancy office or studio to do your good work. If you want to work towards that, great, but it’s not a prerequisite for beginning.

5 - YOU DO NOT NEED TO BE FEARLESS

Last, but not least, you do NOT need to be fearless to start living your dream! Be brave. Start in spite of the fears.

I have come to believe that Creativity and Fear are in fact conjoined twins; they share all the same major organs, and they cannot be separated without killing them both. And you don’t want to murder Creativity just to destroy Fear! (People do this all the time, and it’s tragic… don’t do it.) You must accept that Creativity cannot walk even one step forward except by marching side-by-side with its attached sibling of Fear.

They have to learn how to coexist, in other words, and you must learn to accept them both, if you want to invent things.
— Elizabeth Gilbert

I want to encourage anyone who strives to live a more creative life to simply start. Start right where you are. Figure it out as you go. Keep learning and growing. You get to decide what you put your energy into, and you get to set your own expectations.

Do you have a dream welling up inside of you, but you’re not sure how to start? Shoot me a message. I would love to hear from you and see if I can help you get the ball rolling.

In an effort to foster a creatives community I’ve started a Facebook group called Art is a Record Creatives Community, the same name as this blog. I would love for you to join in the fun as we discuss creative living, projects, art, and life.
